We are immensely proud of our bonnet-making heritage, which represents the origins of our business established in 1845.

Traditional Scottish bonnets evolved from early ceremonial headwear worn by Scottish regiments, and over the years we have been honoured to supply leading pipe bands and Scottish clan organisations across the world.

In recent years, however, demand for these high-quality, handmade traditional bonnets has declined significantly, reflecting wider changes within the industry. As a result, we made the difficult but necessary decision to cease production early 2024.

The manufacturing and distribution of Balmorals and Glengarrys have now been transferred from Robert Mackie of Scotland to House of Tartan. Based in Crieff, House of Tartan is exploring the establishment of a dedicated “Bonnet Factory” in Stewarton, the historic Bonnet Toun.

We are currently in the process of passing on the specialist skills and techniques developed over generations of bonnet making, ensuring that House of Tartan can continue this proud and historic tradition..
